School Fear, Royal Wedding Joy

Good Morning Texas

By Harry M. Covert

he bulletin crawled across the bottom of the screen early in the morning. Alerts were immediate on my iPhone. Reports of a Texas high school shooting. No information available at that moment.

Uh oh! Immediately thoughts and prayers were liftced. I knew what was coming. At the early hour no facts leaked. Moments later the Associated Press noted a young coed was shot in the leg. Nothing else.

Most certainly the news subject was set for the day. I had planned to wax a bit eloquent here about Saturday’s Royal Marriage. I’ve visited Windsor Castle several times in recent years and figured I could describe walking through St.… Read More

THE ADMIRAL MIKE BOORDA STORY

The Sad Failure of Jon Meacham and Company

‘The technological society is a system of domination.’

C. Wright Mills, “The Sociological Imagination”

By LADSON F. MILLS III

merica is a technological society with domination having become it’s defining characteristic. We no longer attempt to convince but eradicate those with whom we disagree.

Sinclair Broadcast Group recently found itself under fire for a decision to direct its local affiliates to issue a statement concerning fake news bias; especially in social media. Sinclair’s statement made it clear their intent to concentrate less on editorializing and more on reporting.

One might safely conclude that such a move would be overwhelmingly welcomed especially by a professional journalist.… Read More

Crimes & Murders; Pusillanimous Politicians; Pardon to Senate?

Charm City Can’t Curb Violence,
Sacks Police Commissioner

By Harry M. Covert

t’s no laughing matter, but Baltimore’s latest police commissioner has been sacked. The reason was a bit surprising. He didn’t reduce violent crimes, which last year included 343 murders. The per capita record for Charm City.

In my experience around law enforcement and criminal courts of many years, no police chief or any other of similar title, has ever been able to halt shootings, stabbings, garrotings, or any other forms of crime.

Even sheriffs, jailers, wardens, and other forms of correctional types, are unable to halt crimes. This is not a shallow thought.… Read More

REDEFINING STARS, HEROES, FAMERS

Spoiled Money-Grabbers, Unwanted Quarterback

By Harry M. Covert

t’s timely to jump into the razzmatazz concerning the poor professional gridders, so victimized in their millionaire paydays for cavorting up and down playing a game. And living large.

The players are so offended by the president’s criticism that some of the put-upons won’t stand for our National Anthem. These spoiled money-grabbers love adoration for their running up and down the fields.

Occasionally they misbehave with gang tackling, clipping, grabbing face masks to hurt opponents and beating up their wives and girlfriends. They also enjoy showing off with all kinds of silly dance movements not in choreographers’ style books.… Read More

THE GUISE of PEACEABLE ASSEMBLY

The Unbelievable Car Killing, Injuries

It was unbelievable to see the fighting explode with fisticuffs, tear gas, then become more horrible when a 20 year old Ohio man drove his car into the downtown crowd killing an innocent local paralegal and injuring 39 others.

By Harry M. Covert

There are plenty of words in the English language to express and condemn the odious events of the past weekend in Charlottesville. All are appropriate for the unpeaceable assembly where haters had their day.

The ghastly would-be protestors placed scars that will be difficult to erase for years to come. People of good will have their work cut out for them.… Read More

HIERARCHY of PUBLICITY

When Did Child Abuse Become Tolerated?

By LADSON F. MILLS III

‘In the world of celebrity the hierarchy of publicity has replaced the hierarchy of descent and even great wealth.’ (C. Wright Mills, Columbia University Sociologist)

f a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’, child abuse whether sexual, physical or verbal stinks. But being on the accepted side of politics apparently means never having to say you’re sorry. Even when it involves child abuse.

While women marched in protest of Donald Trump and asserted that their anatomy will grab back, NBC’s Saturday Night Live writer Katie Rich achieved a new low.… Read More

POSTER CHILD OUT OF TOUCH

Deplorable versus Delusional

‘Denouncing voters who were tired of politics-as-usual and declaring them to be a basket of deplorables is hardly the way to win them over’. — BREDA O’BRIEN

By Ladson F. Mills III
he great American cultural divide is no longer between race, gender or socio-economics. It is now a divide between deplorables and delusionals.

Actress Meryl Streep’s speech at the recent Golden Globe Awards ensures her status as Poster Child for the delusionals.  Criticizing President-Elect Donald Trump for his immoderate comments against a special needs reporter during his recent campaign, Ms. Streep spoke movingly of how his remarks brought her to tears.… Read More

HARRY REID IS NO HYPOCRITE

A Sad Political Obituary

‘The Relish of Duplicitousness’

By Ladson F. Mills III

If as the old saying goes ‘hypocrisy is vices affirmation of virtue’ Harry Reid can never be accused of being a hypocrite.  Whatever virtues he may have once possessed are now as defunct as Hannibal’s Legions.

A December 8th Washington Examiner editorial ‘Good Riddance to Harry Reid’, lays out what can only be acknowledged as one of the saddest political obituaries in the history of the republic. It is not that Reid’s alienation from the truth is unknown. But the shock of seeing them laid out in print painted a picture of a politician whose behavior is abominable.… Read More

JOY IN MIAMI…SANCTUARIES, NOT REALLY

 ENTERING THE SHADES OF HADES

By Harry M. Covert

hey were rejoicing and exceedingly glad. Reverie in Miami and throughout Cuban communities, even here in Frederick, was ecstatic. What brought about the excitement and enthusiasm along with tears of joy? A rather easy answer. Death finally greeted Fidel Castro, the American hater.

The generalissimo despised everybody and was a thorn in the side of free societies. He killed or jailed opponents. At age 90 he entered the shades of Hades. There’s no sense beating around the bush, he ranks down there with the likes of other world-class murderers. I know he pushed the U.S.… Read More

THE DOLLAR A YEAR MAN

Example for all Public Servants? The Answer is . . .

By Harry M. Covert

nce we recover from those wonderful dinners, it’s an exciting time to decorate for the Christmas holidays, indoor and outdoor lights, beautiful ornaments on the trees, and then the shopping thrills and bills for the season. While the season is unveiling all sorts of fun-filled activities, maybe all of the political conversations can slow down.

Several things come to light these days to warrant interesting talk during wassailing, standing under mistletoes, Christmas caroling and, most importantly, for traditionalists praying for a white Christmas. The almanac, Google, and the National Weather Service are being ignored for the purpose of this writing.… Read More
