THE PRATTLING OF SOUTHERN HATERS

Who Skews America?

By Harry M. Covert

I am in no way a racist. I am a lover of history, good, bad or indifferent.

I was all set to ignore all of the hand-wringing about the battle flag. Then I saw the headline and story, “How the South Skews America. We’d be less violent, more mobile and in general more normal if not for Dixie.”

The above writing came from a Texas writer the other day, published by Politico. Now this is an example of things to come from those reprobates who hate everything southern.

Little by little those who hate the south are going to keep on prattling about the meanness and hatefulness and religiosity of those from the south.… Read More

Of Course, the Language is American!

American Spoken Here

 By Harry M. Covert

Changes popular or not seem to be invading all over and the majority of citizens are like lambs to the slaughter. The latest challenge involves spoken language. The official language of Frederick County, the state of Maryland and the rest of the states of union is American.

Of course it is. Why not? Most citizens are monolingual. From the time they come into the world bawling they don’t hear “buenos dias nino” or “guten morgen kind.” It is rather obvious that amid the daily travels around these environs there are no signs extolling “American spoken here.” Nor are there symbols asking about other tongues such as Finnish, Czech, Dutch or Chinese, simplified or traditional.… Read More

A LOVE NOTE TO REMEMBER

Sweet Elocutions and Electronic Mail

By Harry M. Covert

Time is now to affirm, promise, pledge and swear – yes, swear – that no more politicians from Maryland will be jumping into the billion-dollar presidential fray.

I have been receiving a number of “love notes” from those involved on the national scale. In all probability these missives are created, developed, printed and mailed by the same direct mail virtuoso.

Since the recent elocution by the O’Malley fellow the electronic mail hasn’t just been limited to the Democrats’ FLOTUS. I was quite taken by First Lady Michelle Obama’s salutation, “I love you Harry.” Yes, it was pleasant, sweet of course.

‘LET THE WORD GO FORTH . . .’

Ready for Some High Volume Trials?

By Harry M. Covert

Those with news nose sensibilities rank high in getting a jump on monumental decisions by those in authority or their authoritarian positions.

Some may well recall the words of 44 years ago, “Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike.” They are apropos at this very time.

Lots of locals remember the recent Baltimore Troubles of a few weeks ago. Keeping count of the murder rate in the state’s largest city it has reached 43 in May. This is not a badge of honor.

A Change for the $20 Bill?

By Harry M. Covert

The movement has started. Not quite sure how long it will be before it’s consummated but the train is moving. To be somewhat honest I figure midway through the first term of the first woman president the $20 bill will have a new face.

I well know that change is coming for a new frontispiece to replace that old rogue Andrew Jackson, the seventh president. He’s had it long enough, 87 years. But, friends in Lexington, VA., don’t get too excited. Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson isn’t going to be the new person or even considered.… Read More

TIME AGAIN TO REMEMBER CHARLIE KELLER

Thankfully, Baseball Still No. 1

By Harry M. Covert

I STILL HOLD OUT THAT BASEBALL is the nation’s pastime. Sitting in the stands watching a no-hitter, or seeing snappy double plays and homeruns, what’s better to any sport lover? It’s preferable in these quarters to watch a direct throw from catcher to the second baseman and an out. Similarly for an outfielder’s throw.

Back in the days learning the ropes to a long life, I remember well when an 18-year-old catcher named Johnny Bench, on his haunches, warmed up throwing out runners in the minor leagues in Newport News, Va. Those in the park knew exactly he’d be a Hall of Famer.… Read More

ALL’S NOT QUIET ON THE PRESIDENTIAL FRONT

When All is Said and Done . . .

Where are all the real leaders? That’s the Question for 2016

By Harry M. Covert

The would-be’s are flailing all over the place. They and their ghost writers are hustling books, going to places like Iowa in the dead of winter trying to organize electable opinions and lining up begging apparatus in high gear for the highest office in the land.

Yes, while good citizens around the 50-states attempt to deal with all the issues in their hometowns and around the world, candidates of all sorts are doing their best to become the best.… Read More

HOW THE SAUDIS KEEP INSULTING AMERICANS

By Harry M. Covert

The business of protocol is important. Call it what you will, but good manners, dignity and courtesy are always best. Times most often call for posterior osculations around the world and with locals of various cultures and politics.

First Lady Michelle Obama has had her share of criticisms, probably more than most. Most recently she has been reproached for not wearing a head covering when meeting the new royals in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. I am in her corner on this issue. It took lots of mettle and chutzpah for her not to risk spoiling her hairdo.

DON’T CRY FOR CAPTURED TERRORISTS

Take a Few Moments to Recollect

By Harry M. Covert

Verbal bashings continue out of control towards a former president, vice president and the intelligence agency, the “covert ones” if you please.

Despite a plea from the secretary of state not to do so and agreeing to redactions from an ally, the Democratic senator released a report on interrogation methods. It was properly described as—pardon me—crap. Other adjectives have been used. I like them.

Let’s get real. I recall an attack on the Twin Towers in New York in what is remembered as 9/11. Seems like there was a previous terrorism bombing designed by a blind-cleric who is now in prison.… Read More

TRANSPARENCY AND PLAIN OLD TRUTH

Snickers, Grins, Guffaws

By Harry M. Covert

Let’s face it. Ninety-nine and forty-four-one-hundredths percent of people always snicker, then grin or breakout guffawing hearing news that a celebrated institution or person or persons has been caught in some salacious conduct.

That could well be human nature. Most certainly it’s true. As is known to some such conduct is used in a variety of ways: selling newspapers, periodicals books, to promote television and movies, to destroy the subjects and put the fear of the Almighty to one and all.

In the current time the term transparency is, and is all over the place supplanting such old fashioned words as honesty, veracity and plain old truth.… Read More
