Buckling under in Baltimore

By Harry M. Covert

Now the question was, “We have had three African American female mayors in a row. They were all passionate public servants. Two resigned, though. Isn’t it a signal that a different kind of leadership is needed to move Baltimore City forward?”

Okay friends, reporters and news audience. The above interview was heard live on a Baltimore commercial television news show by a seasoned anchor person.

Want the answer? After 25 years as a respected broadcast journalist, Mary Bubala, was forced to apologize profusely and then was fired, axed, for such a simple and easy query.

There could have been no more proper question for the interview.… Read More

Those “who must be obeyed”

Ms. Nancy and Her Nonsense

By Harry M. Covert

The comedy hour, subtly speaking of course, continues. Chatter from within The House can now be described as lugubrious and Machiavellian. (Perfectly good sesquipedalian — long words). Details follow with some enlightenment.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is giving 79-year-olds a bad name. Yes, she may be first among equals, literally or figuratively among her larder, but she doesn’t know squat about who can arrest whom in legal structure.

For example, in the quest to now demean Attorney General William Barr, she got a laugh this week suggesting, quite subtly again, possibilities of Congress arresting current administration officers who don’t obey them.… Read More

Return to Sunday Blue Laws?

By Harry M. Covert

There was a time in days of yore when Sundays were observed as days of rest by most states. Lots of us old fogeys can recall them with various degrees of happiness.

My version of the Blue Laws led to some delightful quiet time on Sunday past. For the first time in years, personal video abilities were silenced for the entire day. What a joy.

Didn’t listen to a single teevee prevaricator(s) spinning uncontrolled repetitious stuff. I didn’t miss a thing. Assuredly to all, my loyalty to the public prints remained intact.… Read More

Make America Moral Again? MAMA

Has Uncle Joe Seen the Light?

By HARRY M. COVERT

Yes, the proof is in the pudding. The ongoing feeding frenzy out of the nation’s capital is rather simple. The old boys, along with the girls, just hate the president because he accurately proved they are the swamp.

The losers, as I always describe them, have been proved as do-nothings, swampers and swampettes. Angry only because they were rejected.

Now before excoriating the minority members in the Senate or making fun of the current majority in the House, I had a dream.

Don’t get overly excited. I have great respect for the late Rev.… Read More

Safety for Sanctuaries

Eyes on the Road, Hands on the Wheel

By HARRY M. COVERT

Driving through some Maryland backroads the other afternoon, I couldn’t help but notice many churches and synagogues. The faithful old Map Quest directed me through the lush communities instead of the speedier interstate.

Naturally the car radio was zipping up and down the dial. The iPhone would permit only voice directions, thus no incoming telephone calls or electronic mail beeps. Certainly a relief.

Moving along Route 26 and then various others, particularly Route 40, I thought incredible. Lots of spiritual citizens must be in control in these parts. I began to worry I was on the wrong road last Saturday.… Read More
