CHANGING THE POLITICAL, PUBLIC VERNACULAR

Stupid Is as Stupid Does

By Harry M. Covert

There was a time believe it or not when the political correctness fad didn’t exist. People of all ages didn’t run around being offended by this and that and elected officials were never called stupid, even though it was often talked about in closed door meetings.

In the journalistic battleground reporters always knew off-the-wall combatants and refrained from printing stories without attribution.

Once in my early days on the police beat looking for a weekend feature I thought it’d be fun to entertain readers with a story on citizen arrests. A police chief almost had a stroke at the suggestion, “please don’t do that.

PRIORITIZING ILLEGALS, ‘TERRORISTS’

Feds Unwilling to fill Beds for Removals

By CHUCK JENKINS

Sheriff, Frederick County, Md.

Why is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) waiting for criminals to become more serious offenders, violent criminals and prioritizing only aggravated felons for removal?

The current administration won’t answer the question, but one fact really jumps out. Nationwide, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has 34,000 beds available for immigrant alien removals. Under the current priority policy of PEP, they are not filling the beds available for removal.

Jenkins is rated the second toughest sheriff in the USA on illegal immigrations.

Why are we not filling the beds?… Read More

WHEN SHERIFFS, I.C.E. COOPERATE

Dealing with Illegals Not Difficult

By Chuck Jenkins

(Jenkins is the respected three-term Frederick County, Md., Sheriff)

I’ve been Frederick County sheriff for nine years. We’re located about one hour northwest of Washington right here. It’s a beautiful county, beautiful community, population of about 240,000 people. I’ve been in law enforcement 25 years locally. I sit on two committees of the National Sheriffs Association, the Homeland Security Committee and also the Immigration and Border Security Committee.

I can speak with some authority to the issues and give a real good local perspective. I’m a strong proponent of law enforcement cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).… Read More

YOU’RE KIDDING, TRUMP versus SANDERS

Is Any Coronation Talk Off?

 By Harry M. Covert

That Donald Trump! That Bernie Sanders! That political landscape! There’s no escaping facts that the chattering classes, partisan politicos and money givers are in awe, unknowing as to how to deal with the current state of affairs.

All of the presidential watchers simply are ignorant of how the money mogul and the “independent” socialist have grabbed public attention. Traditionalists, so-called progressives, purported middle of the roaders and right wingers have been caught with jaws japing.

Let’s face it. Most people thinking about the 2016 presidential competition assumed the event was really over and done with, that H.… Read More

THE PRATTLING OF SOUTHERN HATERS

Who Skews America?

By Harry M. Covert

I am in no way a racist. I am a lover of history, good, bad or indifferent.

I was all set to ignore all of the hand-wringing about the battle flag. Then I saw the headline and story, “How the South Skews America. We’d be less violent, more mobile and in general more normal if not for Dixie.”

The above writing came from a Texas writer the other day, published by Politico. Now this is an example of things to come from those reprobates who hate everything southern.

Little by little those who hate the south are going to keep on prattling about the meanness and hatefulness and religiosity of those from the south.… Read More

Of Course, the Language is American!

American Spoken Here

 By Harry M. Covert

Changes popular or not seem to be invading all over and the majority of citizens are like lambs to the slaughter. The latest challenge involves spoken language. The official language of Frederick County, the state of Maryland and the rest of the states of union is American.

Of course it is. Why not? Most citizens are monolingual. From the time they come into the world bawling they don’t hear “buenos dias nino” or “guten morgen kind.” It is rather obvious that amid the daily travels around these environs there are no signs extolling “American spoken here.”… Read More

A LOVE NOTE TO REMEMBER

Sweet Elocutions and Electronic Mail

By Harry M. Covert

Time is now to affirm, promise, pledge and swear – yes, swear – that no more politicians from Maryland will be jumping into the billion-dollar presidential fray.

I have been receiving a number of “love notes” from those involved on the national scale. In all probability these missives are created, developed, printed and mailed by the same direct mail virtuoso.

Since the recent elocution by the O’Malley fellow the electronic mail hasn’t just been limited to the Democrats’ FLOTUS. I was quite taken by First Lady Michelle Obama’s salutation, “I love you Harry.”

‘LET THE WORD GO FORTH . . .’

Ready for Some High Volume Trials?

By Harry M. Covert

Those with news nose sensibilities rank high in getting a jump on monumental decisions by those in authority or their authoritarian positions.

Some may well recall the words of 44 years ago, “Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike.” They are apropos at this very time.

Lots of locals remember the recent Baltimore Troubles of a few weeks ago. Keeping count of the murder rate in the state’s largest city it has reached 43 in May. This is not a badge of honor.

WISHING, HINDSIGHT ALL WASTEFUL

By Harry M. Covert

Imagine for a few moments if hindsight was 20-20 vision. Imagine if mistakes could be corrected years after the fact. Imagine not having to say “if only I could have done things differently.”

Dear hearts and gentle people, looking back and fretting over small or large things of past actions, activities and or accomplishments can’t be done.

Such looking back and making changes is impossible as are death and taxes. Or, having the future predicted by palm readers, tarot cards and so-called and self-proclaimed prophets.

All of the gotchas going on with political watchers doing their best to smear Jeb Bush who said based on the information available in 2004 to his brother, George W.,… Read More

THREATS TO BALTIMORE POLICE ABOUND

When Lawbreakers Takeover Peaceful Protests

By Harry M. Covert

[Editor’s Note: This column was written Monday before the looting and burning devastated Baltimore and prior to the mayor and governor instituting emergency procedures.]

The tragedy that’s continued to unfold in Baltimore truly affects all segments of Maryland life and most all communities, large and small. There have been no easy answers to Freddie Gray’s death two weeks ago, and the city’s political and police officials have gone to the nth degree to salve the matter.

It was heard loud and clear, probably thousands of times, that protesters were exercising their constitutional rights.… Read More
