Aiming the Digit

The raging gun control clique is crawling out from under the rocks! Their grief, their chagrin, their outrage at the tragic assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D., AZ) Saturday is so obviously political that it makes one’s stomach turn.

“Never let a crisis go to waste,” advises former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel. The leftist politicians and their apologetic pundits are on it – full bore (pun intended).

Six died, Representative Giffords and 13 others were wounded when 23-year-old Jared Lee Loughner opened fire with his Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol on the group at a meet-and-greet session – this one at a Safeway in Tucson, Ariz.

The Glock is law enforcement’s overwhelming selection as official service weapon and a popular self -defense choice for private citizens.

It is worth mentioning the Never-Never Land in which former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell lives. As a parting shot to his constituents in December, he signed a law making it illegal for residents to defend themselves with guns inside their homes. The “Castle Doctrine” he espouses gives criminals the right to sue you if you shoot them while they terrorize your home. That’s our world with radical leftists.

Among the first knee jerker legislators is Rep. Peter King (R., NY). He told Fox News he is preparing a bill to restrict the carrying of firearms within 1,000 yards of any federal building. I used to respect him. We’ll see what other bills – written by such lobbyists as The Brady Campaign – will have cobwebs wiped off as they are dumped in the hopper.

Let’s blame the pistol, not the emotionally disturbed Mr. Loughner, trumpet these well-meaning gun control advocates. They continue to cite discredited data about the connection between crime and legal hand guns. Criminals can get guns in minutes; law abiding citizens in Maryland have to wait 10 days to see if they are “not disapproved” by Maryland State Police (MSP).

Mr. Loughner reportedly bought his weapon from a certified dealer in Tucson, after passing a background check. He may have qualified to purchase the weapon in Maryland had he: (1.) Completed the on-line hand gun certification course; (2.) Passed a background check; (3.) Provided the MSP with a fired cartridge from the purchased gun to prove its “DNA” in case it is suspected of being used in commission of a crime.

I don’t disapprove of the first two requirements above, but there has been ample proof that the fired cartridge is a pie-in-the-sky law enforcement rule, more punitive on the manufacturer and purchaser. A Maryland resident purchasing a pistol from such states as Ohio cannot legally bring the weapon into Maryland because the manufacturer is not required to provide the fired cartridge in most states.

A striking reality in this criminal attack is that once again, the 911 call brought police running to no avail. Such reactive police work and disregard of security for a Member of Congress is no shield against such crazies. Mr. Loughner was a blip on law enforcement’s radar, his threats against the congresswoman a matter of record.

Equally disheartening, not one person in Representative Giffords’ entourage was prepared to defend her. Arizona has become the Wild West again with Mexican drug cartels declaring war that makes former Mexican Bandit Pancho Villa a bit of a small-time criminal.

For the record, in March 1916, Villa and a force of 500 men raided Columbus, N.M., leaving 17 dead Americans. A subsequent punitive expedition led by Gen. John (Black Jack) Pershing failed to capture Villa, who was later killed by Mexican assassins.

The fact that Arizona is such a war zone also should have prompted more security for Congresswoman Giffords. The fact she was a target should have encouraged staff to have someone nearby who was armed and charged with identifying and thwarting such an assault.

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R., MD-6th) – my representative, has weathered a number of threats over the years, his staff convincing him to wear a bullet-proof vest at times, and a staffer with access to a hand gun nearby. Security experts warn that vigilance every day is the key to safety, but would-be assassins also lurk with weapons other than pistols.

For the record, Mr. Loughner was not a Tea Party advocate. He was on the left, not the right. He was not a raging conservative activist. Reputable reports say he was – in fact – a troubled young man. He was reared in a comfortable home by loving parents, who ignored his satanic altar, his recreational drug use and apparent belief that anarchy is cool, hip, or whatever they say. He was kicked out of community college and refused enlistment in the U. S. Army.

Sadly, we can blame ourselves for creating the environment that has confused Jared Lee Loughner. We’ve had more than 60 years of Big Brother socialist programs, providing intense growth in the entitlement industry. It is an era in which our young people believe rules do not apply to them; they can benefit without the labor.

So much for the lesson Capt. John Smith enforced at Jamestown Colony: No Work, No Eat!

Certainly we pray that Congresswoman Giffords and the other wounded victims will recover and enjoy a fulfilling life. Sadly, we offer condolences and prayers for the families of the deceased victims.

Moreover, we pray that America will wake up from its self-induced stupor and realize only the threat of force and the frequent use of punitive law enforcement will discourage such attacks. Gun control only gives criminals the means for their trade.
