POSTER CHILD OUT OF TOUCH

Deplorable versus Delusional

‘Denouncing voters who were tired of politics-as-usual and declaring them to be a basket of deplorables is hardly the way to win them over’. — BREDA O’BRIEN

By Ladson F. Mills III
The great American cultural divide is no longer between race, gender or socio-economics. It is now a divide between deplorables and delusionals.

Actress Meryl Streep’s speech at the recent Golden Globe Awards ensures her status as Poster Child for the delusionals.  Criticizing President-Elect Donald Trump for his immoderate comments against a special needs reporter during his recent campaign, Ms. Streep spoke movingly of how his remarks brought her to tears.… Read More

JOY IN MIAMI…SANCTUARIES, NOT REALLY

Cuban refugees in boat fashioned from an old taxi is stoppped in Florida Straits

 ENTERING THE SHADES OF HADES

By Harry M. Covert

They were rejoicing and exceedingly glad. Reverie in Miami and throughout Cuban communities, even here in Frederick, was ecstatic. What brought about the excitement and enthusiasm along with tears of joy? A rather easy answer. Death finally greeted Fidel Castro, the American hater.

The generalissimo despised everybody and was a thorn in the side of free societies. He killed or jailed opponents. At age 90 he entered the shades of Hades. There’s no sense beating around the bush, he ranks down there with the likes of other world-class murderers.… Read More

THE DOLLAR A YEAR MAN

Example for all Public Servants? The Answer is . . .

By Harry M. Covert

Once we recover from those wonderful dinners, it’s an exciting time to decorate for the Christmas holidays, indoor and outdoor lights, beautiful ornaments on the trees, and then the shopping thrills and bills for the season. While the season is unveiling all sorts of fun-filled activities, maybe all of the political conversations can slow down.

Several things come to light these days to warrant interesting talk during wassailing, standing under mistletoes, Christmas caroling and, most importantly, for traditionalists praying for a white Christmas. The almanac, Google, and the National Weather Service are being ignored for the purpose of this writing.… Read More

VIGILS and the BULLY PULPIT

The Awful Effects of Continuing Terrorism

By Harry M. Covert

The time has come for a real vigil. Using this bully pulpit something must be done to halt the slide to “Hell in a Handbasket” as a humorist of yore penned a half-century ago.

Were I extolling on a pastoral platform at this very moment I would most certainly disclaim use of the caustic word for the netherworld. Preachers should avoid using such adjectives while representing The Almighty on divine premises. No slips.

Of late lots of well-meaning people have been conducting vigils, carrying lit candles, holding hands and moaning and mooning over the awful murders not just in Florida but throughout the country in Baltimore, Chicago, Texas and other states.… Read More

Driving around Windsor Castle With O

Advice from Across the Way

By Harry M. Covert

In these days of fast changing lifestyles, it is always pleasant to receive

   PRINCE PHILIP AT THE WHEEL

notes from readers. Usually when readers disagree with viewpoints, they are civil.

Some prevailing thought has it that nasty and unkind retorts are better and more palpable.

Well, as has been proven of late, opinionators find it easy and acceptable in these days to tag people with whom they disagree as bigots, racists, and fear-mongers.

I’m not sure how much worse the dividing public discourse will become, but the battle is on for who can be uglier, meaner and downright foolish.… Read More

ADVENT 2015

Christmas in a Heartfelt, Invisible Way

By K. Brewster Hastings

Grief is a strange state of being as one approaches Christmas.

This is my first major holiday since my mother died in June. My father died in 1996 so I am now without parents. A friend tells me, “Now, you’re an orphan in the world.” Also, a few weeks ago, my oldest brother Clark died alone at age 65, in a remote town of the Dominican Republic.

Now, I am assured my father, my mother, my brother died in the peace and mercy of the Lord. So, I have no “salvation anxiety.” Their departure is total gain!… Read More

FREDERICK’S FIRST CLASS DEPUTY

Courtesy to an MS-13 Gang Member

 By Harry M. Covert

Nov. 10, 2015

It’s a nice feel good story. A Frederick County, Maryland, deputy sheriff used great restraint. During a broad morning light he took a slugging in the face and neck from an illegal MS-13 gang member.

There on Key Parkway in Frederick investigating a minor traffic matter, Deputy First Class Greg Morton restrained himself. After the physical assault he didn’t resort to any deadly reaction. He could have, probably should have.

In times past assaulting a deputy or other sworn officer was a major no-no. No question about it.… Read More

WHEN NEIGHBORHOOD GROCERY STORES WERE

Labor Day, Nickel Soda, 18¢ Bread

By Harry M. Covert

Labor Day is Monday and today is a perfect time to revisit first days of the first job. The experience sticks with most people no matter the passage of time. Me too.

Let’s relax for a while from all the partisan and silly debates around the nation. We need a rest from all the gabble flowing non-stop.

I like to recall the wonderful neighborhood grocery stores. Every city and town had them. They stick out because customers phoned in orders, they were charged on the family tabs, bills were cleared up usually on Friday paydays and orders were delivered by bicycle, if within a few blocks and by panel truck otherwise.… Read More

WHEN SHERIFFS, I.C.E. COOPERATE

Dealing with Illegals Not Difficult

By Chuck Jenkins

(Jenkins is the respected three-term Frederick County, Md., Sheriff)

I’ve been Frederick County sheriff for nine years. We’re located about one hour northwest of Washington right here. It’s a beautiful county, beautiful community, population of about 240,000 people. I’ve been in law enforcement 25 years locally. I sit on two committees of the National Sheriffs Association, the Homeland Security Committee and also the Immigration and Border Security Committee.

I can speak with some authority to the issues and give a real good local perspective. I’m a strong proponent of law enforcement cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).… Read More

Of Course, the Language is American!

American Spoken Here

 By Harry M. Covert

Changes popular or not seem to be invading all over and the majority of citizens are like lambs to the slaughter. The latest challenge involves spoken language. The official language of Frederick County, the state of Maryland and the rest of the states of union is American.

Of course it is. Why not? Most citizens are monolingual. From the time they come into the world bawling they don’t hear “buenos dias nino” or “guten morgen kind.” It is rather obvious that amid the daily travels around these environs there are no signs extolling “American spoken here.” Nor are there symbols asking about other tongues such as Finnish, Czech, Dutch or Chinese, simplified or traditional.… Read More
